Colorado shooting: How Americans deal with media-driven events

For better and for worse, society today is driven by sophisticated and powerful information technology that allows us to know details about everything?virtually immediately. The latest example: the Colorado shooting rampage.

As everyone from politicians to parents of?slain children search for answers in the Colorado shooting, many observers say the high-profile event is just the latest example of both the progress and?problems in?dealing with violent, media-driven?events.

We?live in a society driven by increasingly sophisticated and powerful information technology that allows us to know details about everything?virtually immediately, says? UCLA assistant professor and psychiatrist Dr. Reef Karim, adding, ?and this has a good and a bad side.?

Cell phone video clips from the Aurora movie theater provided a nearly instantaneous?real-time window into events as they unfolded. Television coverage has?blanketed everything from?Monday?s?court appearance by shooting suspect James Holmes to the personal stories of the victims and survivors.

Comfort in response to the shootings in Colorado

The positive side of such immediate, up-close contact, he says, ?is that we collectively can respond?as a society, we can send money and relief and bring people in to help because we can relate right away.??

The downside, he says, ?is that?we are seeing it all?through the lens it is being presented to us in.? This means we are being drawn through the event according to the biases and prejudices of the technology and the?people behind it.

?By and large,??he points out, ?these media are driven by ratings and the need to attract the largest audience,??not educate or uplift them.

We have shifted from a cool medium that provides some distance to the ?hottest possible,? says Bernard Luskin, president-elect of the media psychology division of the American?Psychological Association?in Washington. ?This means we are right in the midst of events now,? he says.

But as technology progresses, he says he sees little progress in the ability to respond and handle the deeper implications of violence.?

?The information is geared towards the needs of the people delivering the information rather than the deep, emotional needs for empathy and sympathy that the victims of real violence require,? he says.

At the same time, there has been marginal progress in certain areas, points out Dr. Karim.

Compare the coverage of the victims in the Colorado and Arizona shootings to the?focus of the coverage in the Penn State scandal.?

qualcomm-signWireless equipment producer Qualcomm has just released its fiscal Q3 2012 financials, and it looks like the company's recent hot streak has finally slowed down. Qualcomm reported revenues of $4.63 billion -- up 28% year-over-year, but down 6% from the company's previous record-breaking quarter. Meanwhile, the company also reported non-GAAP earnings of $0.85 per share, which is up 16% year-over-year but down 16% from Q2. Analysts expected the company to report earnings of $0.86 per share on revenues of $4.7 billion ? both slightly lower than what the company managed to hit in the previous quarter.

Cele|bitchy ? Blog Archive ? Owners of the world's largest, gaudiest ...

I love seeing photos of celebrity real estate and interior design. To me, they?re like shirtless photos of hot guys, they fuel fantasies of living in those pristine, decked out mansions. Or, like in the case of tacky houses like Nicky Hilton?s, it?s fun to point and laugh at rich people with bad taste. That?s the case with this latest story on a new documentary on the world?s largest mansion under construction, a giant eyesore in Florida dubbed ?Versailles.? While the nouveau riche owners were constructing it, while filming was underway, they ended up losing a lot of money after the market crashed and facing the possibility that they were in way over their heads. The mansion remains to this day just a giant, gaudy shell of a house. (You can see tons of photos of it here. The few photos where it looks super gaudy and finished are just ?artist?s renditions? of what they intended to do with it.) The film ends with their insane house still under massive construction and facing foreclosure. Now the homeowners, the owners of the biggest timeshare company, want the filmmaker to edit it in order to show that they?ve since recovered control of the home. The filmmaker isn?t backing down, though. Here?s more:

The timeshare tycoon who wants to build the biggest home in the country ? America?s very own Palace of Versailles ? claims an upcoming documentary about his exploits is misleading.

And because of that, Westgate Resorts President David Siegel wants the director of ?The Queen of Versailles? to tweak the ending.

In a letter obtained by TheWrap.com, Siegel wrote to director Lauren Greenfield?s attorney that his real estate company is currently healthy and ?the most profitable? in its 32-year history.

He said he?s having no problem finishing construction of the palatial 90,000-square-foot mansion on 10 acres in Windermere, Fla.

Today?s economic troubles served as a backdrop for the film?s drama.

?Versailles does not face foreclosure because it was refinanced, and construction is starting again,? Siegel wrote in a letter dated Monday.

He?s asking the filmmaker to update the postscript with that information.
?As it stands now, it?s like ending an account of a basketball game after the third quarter,? he added. ?I believe that it?s only fair that (Greenfield) complete the story honestly and with integrity.?

Siegel, 76, also has a lawsuit against Greenfield, executive producer Frank Evers and the Sundance Institute for alleged defamation, claiming the documentary contains harmful statements, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Those include: ?Their timeshare empire collapses? and ?their house is foreclosed.?
The documentary first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and opens in limited release Friday. Cable TV network Bravo is supposed to air it in 2013.

Siegel, meanwhile, also contends that some of the scenes were orchestrated, with the whole documentary coming off as a ?Real Housewives of Orlando pilot,? he wrote.
But Martin Garbus, the director?s attorney, told TheWrap.com that the film will not be changed.

?It tells a story about a time in America and everybody should see it and make their own judgement (sic),? Garbus said in a statement. ?Nothing in The Queen of Versailles is staged. There is no reason to update the film.?

The documentary also features Siegel?s 46-year-old wife, Jackie, and the eight children they are raising together.
Construction on Versailles began about six years ago, but work was halted in 2009 after Siegel said he had to refocus on his company, the Wall Street Journal reported. Just two-thirds of the home was completed.

In the meantime, Siegel looked into selling the opulent stunner ? at one point dropping the asking price from $100 million finished or $75 million as-is to $65 million as-is.

Siegel was recently approved for a $25 million loan to help finish construction, according to reports, after the documentary completed filming.
And with 13 bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, three pools, two movie theaters, a bowling alley, a ballroom for 500 guests and Italian white marble in the designs, Siegel isn?t exactly motivated to sell the house, he told The Journal last week.

?Then again, I don?t need it, either,? he added.

[From The NY Daily News]

There are photos below of the home as it is now (as I gather), under construction ? I guess the Seigels are shown in their other giant mansion while this one is getting prepared. They needed a $25 million loan to finish it and that think that somehow means they?re not in too deep? I found several real estate listings for this ?house.? It has its own website, Lake Butler Mansion, and it?s also listed on PriceyPads.com, which has a link to over a hundred photos of the place. Inside, it just looks like a big cathedral or a public building under construction. It?s just a tacky, overpriced dream. It reminds me of Candy Spelling?s house, but she was able to offload that one to a young heiress with gaudy taste. Candy also had much better, albeit early 90s, taste in decor. What billionaire would drop $65 million on this monstrosity or pay $100 million to get it completed? The Seigels are stuck with it.

Here?s the trailer for The Queen of Versailles

Woods ready for softer test

(AP) ? Tiger Woods' last trip to northwest England for the British Open ended in a two-shot win at Royal Liverpool.

That was six years ago, and it seems even longer.

It was his first major after the death of his father, and he sobbed on the shoulder of his caddie and his wife, both of whom are no longer with him. There was no discussion about No. 1 in the world because Woods' point average was nearly double that of Phil Mickelson.

Now it's a matter of getting back.

The good news for Woods is that the British Open is the first major since the 2011 Masters that he has a mathematical chance to return to No. 1 in the world. At this time a year ago, he was No. 19 and at home in Florida letting his leg injuries heal.

Only it's not that simple. Woods now has gone four years since winning his last major, and he conceded Tuesday that they are not getting any easier to win. Fifteen players have won the last 15 majors, the longest stretch without a multiple winner since 1993 to 1998.

But when asked whether he was feeling any anxiety over when he will win another major, Woods simply shook his head.

"I just try and put myself there," Woods said. "I think that if I continue putting myself there enough times, then I'll win major championships."

The trouble this year has been giving himself chances.

If there are questions about the state of his game, look only at the trophies he won at Bay Hill, Muirfield Village and Congressional ? more wins than anyone on the PGA Tour, tied with Branden Grace of South Africa for most worldwide.

But the majors have been a disappointment. Woods had his worst finish as a pro at the Masters (tie for 40th), then vanished on the weekend of the U.S. Open when he was tied for the lead after two rounds at The Olympic Club.

He wins one week, he misses the cut the next week.

What's going on?

"If I knew the answer, I'd tell you," Woods said. "But I don't. I just keep trying to work and keep trying to get better. And I've had a few wins this year, which is good. But also I've had a few poor performances, as well. So I'm just trying to get better, get more consistent. And that's something I'm looking forward to in the future."

The immediate future is Royal Lytham & St. Annes. This will be his third time playing the links course, the most for any British Open except St. Andrews. Woods had a 66 in the second round in 1996 as an amateur, a day that convinced him he was ready to turn pro. He made an early charge Sunday in 2001 only to fall back with a triple bogey and tie for 25th, nine shots behind.

Lytham was dry and relatively calm by British standards those two times. This year is different.

A miserable English summer of rain has left the course green and soft, and the rough so incredibly dense that Woods described some spots as unplayable. That much was evident Tuesday morning on the 10th hole, when he slightly pulled his 3-wood into hillocks covered by thick native grass. Six marshals were looking for his ball. Woods simply walked past them ? it was a practice round ? and even when he was on the green, the marshals had not abandoned the search.

Throw in some wind, and the 206 bunkers that give Lytham its character, and it should be a demanding test.

"The rough is more lush. The fairways are softer. The ball is not chasing as much," Woods said. "This is different. It's a slower golf course, but still, it has some mounding in it. The bunkers are penal. And it's just something that we as players are going to have to plod our way around."

When he won his first Open in St. Andrews at 19-under 269, Woods famously went an entire week without hitting out of the bunker. His third claret jug at Royal Liverpool in 2006 was memorable for the fact he only hit driver once in four days, instead chasing a 3-iron down the brown, brittle fairways.

It looks like he will employ a similar strategy at Lytham, only the sheer number of bunkers make that a challenge.

"This is different," Woods said. "The bunkers are staggered differently here. There's some forced carries to where you have to fly it and then stop it or try and skirt past them. You can't just either lay it up or bomb over the top. There has to be some shape to shots. I think that's one of the reasons why ... the list of champions here have all been just wonderful ball strikers, because you have to be able to shape the golf ball both ways here."

That's what Woods takes pride in about his improved game. Lytham figures to be as good of a measuring stick as any tournament.

PST: Forte optimistic Bears deal done this weekend

Terrell Suggs, Ed ReedAP

Ravens safety Ed Reed realizes that players can get what they want only by holding out.? Reed himself seems to be seriously considering a holdout of his own, even though he?s under contract for 2012.

Last month, I had an epiphany on this subject, thanks to our buddy Ross Tucker of NBC Sports Network, SiriusXM NFL Radio, Sports USA, and more.? I now believe that, regardless of whether a player is laboring under the slotted rookie deal that he has outperformed or whether he?s playing out a veteran deal that the team always has the unilateral ability to tear up and disregard, he has the right to hold out.

He has the right to hold out because, if he does, he?s behaving no differently than the men who amassed enough money and influence to own an NFL team.? Businessmen don?t simply trip into success (although some are born into it); they make shrewd decisions, based on the realities of any given situation with which they?re faced.

For players who have contracts and who want new ones, they can hold out if they?re willing to accept the potential consequences.? For starters, the player who holds out while under contract will be fined $30,000 per day.? He also may have to surrender bonus checks that he already has cashed, and possibly already has spent.? If he has fewer than four years of service toward free agency, a holdout could delay his entry to the open market by another year.? And he could face a fan and/or media backlash.

But, in the end, if he knows that his team needs him enough to eventually bend, it could be the smartest, shrewdest break he ever makes for himself.

That?s why we disagree completely, unequivocally, and totally with Ashley Fox of ESPN.com, who basically lectures Reed about the dangers of a holdout, urging him to be a good soldier and report for duty.? Fox argues that ?[h]oldouts rarely work,? citing the green-and-white brick wall into which diminutive receiver DeSean Jackson rammed his head when he held out in 2011.? Fox claims that all 32 teams will react as negatively as the Eagles did in Jackson?s case, prompting him to tuck his tail between his tookis and show up.

What about Titans running back Chris Johnson?? He turned a multi-week holdout into $30 million guaranteed, even though he was under contract for two more years.? Ditto for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, who held out two years ago, got paid, and may hold out again.

Many other players have held out, and they have gotten paid.? Maybe not what they wanted, but more than they were due to receive.

In Reed?s case, doing what the Ravens assume he?ll never do could get their attention.? And it could get them to give him more money.? And it could be much more money than he?d get come 2013, especially if he suffers an injury in 2012.

It?s inherently contradictory for journalists to in one breath fret about head injuries and in the next to discourage the men who put themselves in harm?s way from doing whatever they think they have to do to get fully compensated for the risks they take.

As long as the player accepts and understands the possible cost of a failed holdout, we fully support anyone who decides to take a stand, regardless of whether he has one year left on his contract, or 10.? If owners were players with skills that the team needed, that?s precisely what the owners would do, too.

Recce, A Rich, Interactive Map That?s Also A Gaming Platform, Launches With $4M From NEA

The Shard, HMS Belfast & Tower BridgeWhile we wait for the full-throttle effect?of Apple Maps in iOS6, a new app has launched today that is raising the game for what we should be expecting out of the world of social-mobile-local services. Recce -- pronounced "wreckie", British slang for "reconnaissance" (only English people would make slang out of a word like that) -- presents a 3D, animated birds-eye view of a city, and what is going on in it, by aggregating dozens of data feeds from other services -- ranging from mapping providers to those building listings of places to eat, and social networks like Twitter, integrating it all, and then presenting it in a slick, attractive app that is essentially a searchable map. (Think of Recce as the pretty face of big data.) And it's launching with some support: NEA is the lead investor in a $4 million Series A round in Recce's developers, London-based eeGeo, with total funding for the company now at $4.7 million including a seed investment from?Initial Capital, Swordfish Investments, and others. In its earliest iteration, Recce is only providing maps and data for central London, with San Francisco and New York next in line, but its developers are thinking big. The intention is to extend out to many more cities over the coming months. And, signficantly, to do more besides maps: Recce is also building itself out to be a platform not only for all location-based services but also location-specific games.

Allmendinger says he tested positive for stimulant

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Suspended NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger said Wednesday that he tested positive for a stimulant and was collecting his medicines and supplements in an attempt to figure out what got him in trouble.

A statement issued by Allmendinger's business manager did not identify the stimulant and said the driver does not know what caused him to fail the random test conducted June 29. He was suspended Saturday and NASCAR has not revealed the substance, either.

"AJ tested positive for a stimulant. He has no idea why the first test was positive, and he has never knowingly taken any prohibited substance," said Tara Ragan, vice president of Allmendinger's Walldinger Racing Inc. "AJ is collecting his medicines and supplements for testing to determine whether an over-the-counter product caused his positive test."

Allmendinger is the second Sprint Cup Series driver to be suspended under the NASCAR drug policy implemented in 2009. The 30-year-old Allmendinger has requested his "B'' urine sample be tested, and it's not clear when that will occur.

Allmendinger said Tuesday that he would never knowingly take a prohibited substance.

"Obviously I would never do anything to jeopardize my opportunity here at Penske Racing or to my fellow drivers. I am very conscious about my training and health and would never knowingly take a prohibited drug," he said.

According to NASCAR's drug policy, a stimulant is defined as "amphetamine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy (MDMA), Eve (MDEA), MDA, PMA, Phentermine, and other amphetamine derivatives and related compounds."

In March, Allmendinger signed on as a brand ambassador for "Fuel in a Bottle," energy and protein power shots owned by Charlotte-based BYB Brands, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coca-Cola Bottling Co.

There's been no official link to his positive test and the power shots. The March press release announcing the partnership with Allmendinger described "Fuel in a Bottle" as a booster that "provides a quick energy boost in convenient 2-ounce liquid form. It is packed with B vitamins, is sugar free and has zero calories."

The power boost includes "essential amino acids that your body needs," the release said. "Both varieties of Fuel in a Bottle allow consumers to recharge in minutes. Run stronger for hours."

Among the ingredients listed on the label are L-Phenylalanine and caffeine, which are both mild stimulants.

Jeremy Mayfield, the first driver to be suspended under the policy, tested positive for methamphetamine. He has denied for more than three years that he ever took meth, and blamed the positive test on a mix of an over-the-counter allergy remedy and a prescription for attention deficit disorder.

Rather than go through NASCAR's recovery program, Mayfield fought in court to have his suspension overturned. He abandoned his bid earlier this year.

Ragan said Allmendinger is working through NASCAR's process to resolve the issue.

"AJ and all of us at Walldinger Racing respect NASCAR's testing program, and he has requested that his "B'' sample be tested as part of the process of getting to the bottom of this," she said. "We will have the opportunity to review all of the scientific data surrounding the test following the "B'' sample test, but our understanding is that AJ's test was slightly above the threshold."

The suspension was announced hours before Saturday night's race at Daytona International Speedway and Sam Hornish Jr. was hustled in to race in Allmendinger's place. Penske Racing has already said that Hornish will drive the No. 22 Dodge this weekend at New Hampshire.

The team has not discussed its plans for its first-year driver. Allmendinger was hired in late December after Penske's sudden split with Kurt Busch opened the highly-coveted seat.

Meanwhile, sports car team owner Michael Shank issued a statement of support for Allmendinger, whom he referred to as "a friend of mine, actually more like a brother."

Shank and Allmendinger last October partnered to form an IndyCar Series team, but a lack of sponsorship prevented them from fielding a car this season. But Allmendinger has competed for Michael Shank Racing for years in the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race, and in January he anchored the race-winning entry for one of the biggest career victories for both driver and owner.

"I stand 100 percent behind him in this challenging time," Shank said. "He has stood behind me and been loyal to my team for seven years, even when we let him down he never considered bailing on me and my team. I will certainly never leave him behind when tough times come for him. No matter what happens he will stay my friend and continue to drive for me whenever possible."

Liberty Energy buys Central Texas acreage

Liberty Energy has purchased more than 1,000 acres in Central Texas.

Liberty Energy Corp. (OTCCB: LBYE) has acquired more than 1,000 acres in Central Texas for exploration and production of oil and gas leases.

The acquisition is in line with the Houston-based company?s strategy of growing shareholder value by acquiring proven domestic oil and gas assets, CEO Ian Spowart said in a statement.

Liberty is finalizing the geological and geophysical work plan for the new leases, which are considered low-risk. Spowart said the acreage is a great addition to the company?s existing portfolio.

The acquisition includes leases in Batrop, Caldwell and Eastland counties. Financial details of the transaction weren?t disclosed.

Liberty is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company that primarily works in the sourcing and production of fuel supplies in the United States and Europe. The company has holdings throughout Texas and in Bulgaria.

Earlier this month, Liberty said the company would retain Resultz Media Group Corp. to handle investor communications and marketing for the rest of the year.

Deon covers energy and law for the Houston Business Journal.

Monitoring goes mobile: how Camfed is revolutionising data collection in rural Africa

?UNICEF/NYHQ2011-0824/Jan Grarup
Camfed tracks every dollar and pound it spends on girls? education in Africa to make sure the girls and young women it supports are getting the full benefit of money from donors. It?s essential work, but it?s also time-consuming: since 1993 Camfed has supported more than 60,000 girls and young women through school and provided training to thousands more across five countries in Africa. But now Camfed is going paperless in a move that will free up resources to help many more girls access education ? by using mobile phones to gather data.

Until this year, volunteers from the rural districts in which Camfed works used paper forms to collect detailed data from schools about the girls being supported. This included information on everything from school performance and attendance to whether a girl had received shoes or a uniform. These hard copy reports would then be sent to the Camfed national office in each country and they in turn entered the data into a computer database . Though this thoroughness enabled Camfed to be fully transparent and accountable for every girl it supports, the process was slow, costly and subject to human error, and as Camfed grew, paper-based data collection became less and less viable.

Simple new technology is changing all that. Thanks to customised software, Camfed volunteers can now enter data about students? progress onto mobile phones ?

a now almost ubiquitous technology in Africa ? and upload. The data is then??? transferred to a cloud-based platform to be safely stored and sorted. Though using mobile phones to collect data in this way is becoming increasingly common in healthcare, its use in education is completely new.

?Using phones to collect data not only saves on resources, reduces risks associated with loss of paper forms in transit, and minimises errors during data entry and analysis,? said David Nkrumah Boateng of Camfed Ghana, ?but it also serves as a unique tool that helps us in the country office keep in touch with volunteers in the field and significantly improves our ability to respond to issues in real time?.

?The social skills this form of data gathering helps to generate, such as giving volunteers confidence to use technology, has also contributed immensely to building closer working relationships and effective partnerships.?

The initiative also showcased the increasing importance of charitable and private sector collaborations. Though both the mobile phone software for capturing data and the technology platform were available off-the-shelf, they were from different providers and the organization had no way initially of getting the data it collected from mobile phones into the reporting platform. Developers from IT consultancy ThoughtWorks, working pro-bono, stepped in to help and within three weeks had developed a bridge between the mobile phone technology and data storage platform.

For countries where English is not the primary language, ThoughtWorks also helped create a behind the scenes ?dictionary? to translate entries in the local language to English. Phone users see the forms and enter the data in their local language, but as the data is transmitted and arrives in Camfed?s database, it is automatically translated.

Camfed has ambitious plans for this new technology, which is already having a major impact. From an initial trial involving 60 users, Camfed now has 475 volunteers utilizing the technology to collect data on thousands of girls in hundreds of schools. It now plans to roll out this cost-effective and easy-to-operate system to field and office users throughout Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe ? and to use the data to help schools identify ways to improve school performance.
