Idol Goes Baseball: Phillips, Cook at the MLB All-Star Game

America's pastime's 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City will feature performers this year from America's favorite television pastime for the past seven of the past eight years -- "American Idol." Not only will Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips perform before the game itself, but Season 7 winner David Cook is scheduled at the events. So is Kellie Pickler and Haley Reinhart.

There are perks to having an in-house megastar generator at your network. Fox Sports, which is broadcasting the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is part of the Fox family of networks, which includes Fox Television, the network of the hit singing competition "American Idol." So there seems to be a natural fit in that a show that has produced several dozen singing stars and celebrities over a decade would supply the entertainment at the network-covered sporting event.

Not only will this season's winner of "American Idol," Phillip Phillips, be there to perform, but so will Kellie Pickler and David Cook. The American Idol Band will also perform. And Haley Reinhart will participate in the pre-Home Run Derby celebrity softball game as well. In short, Fox Television's self-promotion -- or at least its promotion of its ratings flagship -- will be in full swing at this year's schedule of events connected to the "Midsummer Classic."

According to MLB.com, Phillips will hit the field on Tuesday evening in a special pre-game performance spotlighting his hit song, "Home." It is part of a tribute to the recovery efforts taking place in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Season 5 finalist Kellie Pickler, who recently scored her third Top 10 Billboard 200 album with 100 Proof, will perform "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch.

David Cook, who is a hometown boy (he owns a home in Kansas City, host of the 2012 All-Star Game), will sing the national anthem on Monday evening just prior to the beginning of the Home Run Derby, an event that pits baseball's best hitters in a competition to see who can hit the most home runs. Earlier in the day, he will participate in a celebrity softball game. Joining him will be Season 10 third-place finalist Haley Reinhart, who released her first album, Listen Up!, in May.

"American Idol" finished in second place in the Nielsen ratings this year, the first time the show has not ended the television season (ending at the close of June) in first place since 2005-06. Currently on hiatus, auditions for the upcoming twelfth season are currently taking place across the country. "Idol" will return to Fox Television in January.

Phillip Phillips also just hit the road with the Top 10 finalists from Season 11 on the "American Idol Live Tour," which kicked off in Detroit Friday night.

The Home Run Derby gets started on ESPN on Monday evening at 8:00 p.m. EST.

The 84th MLB All-Star Game will start at 7:30 p.m. EST on Fox Television on Tuesday, July 10.
