Not so spectacular

Matthew+Stafford+Detroit+Lions+v+Oakland+Raiders+y5LcmFG1tiMlGetty Images

There?s little worse than having your starting quarterback leave with an injury in the preseason, but it looks like the Lions got little more than a temporary scare from Matthew Stafford on Saturday.

The Lions quarterback left the game with an injury to his left hand, but x-rays taken during the contest were negative. Stafford, who wore a wrap on the hand, said afterward that he would have returned if it had been a regular season game.

?Probably what would have happened in a regular season game is right after it happened, I would have up for x-rays,? Stafford said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. ?If they would have said they were negative, I would have come back in the game. It feels okay right now. It feels fine, really. It?s scary to look down and see your hand swell up by the second.?

Running back Kevin Smith also seems to have avoided an injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an extended period. The oft-injured running back hurt his ankle early in the second half, but also got good news when x-rays came back negative on Saturday.

?It just gets scary under the pile of those big guys laying on you. It?s just a minor tweak, something I?m pretty sure I can get rid of quick. Just stay in the training room,? Smith said. ?More than anything, I was very scared. Just being that I had a high ankle sprain, I know how long it took to get back healthy. It?s not a high ankle sprain, so that?s positive. I?ll get in the treatment room and get back as soon as I can.?

Given the thin ranks at running back early in the season for Detroit, an injury to Smith would have forced the team to look for backfield help before the season starts. They still might do that, but it doesn?t appear they will be quite as desperate as many feared when Smith hobbled off the field in Oakland.

Now the Lions just need to clear up the status of the two cornerbacks who went down against the Raiders to make the whole night a momentary scare instead of a lingering problem.

Predicting outbreaks of dengue fever according to climate

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, affects hundreds of millions of people in around one hundred tropical countries and causes 25 000 deaths per year. In the absence of a vaccine, determining the factors that influence epidemics to predict them better is a real public health challenge. One scientific study, conducted in New Caledonia, demonstrates the essential role of the local climate in epidemic dynamics. IRD researchers and their New Caledonian colleagues(1) analysed epidemiological and climatological data gathered in Noumea over forty years. They highlighted the correlation between specific weather conditions and dengue fever outbreaks.

This work enabled statistical models to be drawn up explaining and predicting viral episodes. The Caledonian public health authorities have already integrated these tools into their decision-making strategies and a similar approach in other South Pacific countries is being developed, with a new collaborative regional programme.

Mainly vectored by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, dengue fever is present in one hundred or so countries in the intertropical zone. It affects one hundred million people, causing more or less severe symptoms such as fever, muscular pain, headaches, digestive disorders and even hemorrhaging, causing 25 000 deaths per year throughout the world. No vaccine or specific treatment exists to this day.

The South Pacific region is regularly the seat of dengue fever epidemics, of increasing frequency and amplitude. In New Caledonia, the last epidemic in 2009 affected 8 400 people. It is the second most affected French overseas territory. Like for other vector-borne diseases, the occurrence or not of epidemic outbreaks is the consequence of complex interactions between humans, the virus and vector mosquitoes, influenced by environmental and climatic factors. Until now, these mechanisms have remained poorly understood.

In Noumea, a reliable system of monitoring of dengue fever cases has existed for forty years. In parallel, daily meteorological measurements have been made since the 1950's. IRD scientists and their partners(1) compared these monthly, quarterly and annual meteorological and epidemiological data over 40 years. The existence of these long series enabled a statistical model to be constructed that shows the essential role of the local climate in the dynamic of epidemics in Noumea. The scientists also accurately identified the meteorological conditions that were decisive in the occurrence of epidemics.

From explanation...

In order to analyse 40 years of data, doctors, entomologists, climatologists, mathematicians and forecasters first studied the seasonal variability in the disease, setting apart epidemic from non-epidemic years. All the outbreaks were similarly distributed, with a start in January, a peak between March and May, and ending in July.

In a second phase, researchers analysed the variability in the appearance of dengue fever epidemics from one year to the next. To do so, an "explanatory" model was developed. For the first time, it revealed that the occurrence of epidemics in the greater Noumea area could be explained by the two variables of temperature and relative humidity. The same scenario has been operating over 40 years. If the temperature exceeds 32?C for more than 12 days in January, February and March -- or during the southern summer -- and humidity exceeds 95 % for less than 12 days in January, a wave of dengue fever occurs. And vice versa: when cooler summer temperatures are combined with wetter weather, an epidemic occurs in almost all cases.

... to forecasts.

Again, thanks to the long series of data, a second "predictive" model was drawn up to anticipate epidemics from one year to the next. This time, it is based on maximum temperature and relative humidity values for the months of October to December in the previous year. These results are crucial. Using the system developed, public health authorities can anticipate orders for mosquito repellent and insecticide, organise vector control, optimise treatment systems, etc.

El Ni?o and dengue fever: no direct link

Larger-scale climate variables such as El Ni?o / La Ni?a influence the local climate. The phenomenon occurs every 3 to 7 years. Contrary to belief, the study did not reveal any statistical link between epidemics and La Ni?a in New Caledonia. These results suggest that the influences of this type of climate variable on dengue fever outbreaks depend on complex geographic specificities.

From an operational point of view, the AeDenPAC programme(2), led by the New Caledonia Pasteur Institute and involving numerous IRD scientists and other partners(3), is under way. It aims at developing similar models and extending research on the entomological level in the South Pacific, in particular in French Polynesia and Fiji. This expansion will gradually feed knowledge of the impact of global warming on the dynamic of dengue fever epidemics in the Pacific.

(1) This work was conducted in partnership with Aix-Marseille University, the Noumea Hospital Centre, the New Caledonia Pasteur Institute, M?t?o France in New Caledonia, the Department of Social and Sanitary Affairs (DASS) and the Secretariat of the South Pacific (SPC).

Best Buy suspends profit outlook, share buybacks

(Reuters) - Electronics retailer Best Buy Co Inc - its share price near a nine-year low - suspended profit forecasts and share buybacks for the rest of the year on Tuesday to give its newly named chief executive time to construct his own turnaround plan.

The moves came in tandem with weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings and underlined the challenges facing Hubert Joly in reviving the company, the world's largest consumer electronics retailer.

Adding to the company's woes was weak demand for electronics in key markets, particularly China, to a degree that took analysts by surprise.

"The clock is ticking on this one. He doesn't have the liberty of taking time to get to know the business model intimately," said Stacey Widlitz, president of consulting firm SW Retail Advisors, referring to Joly. "Investors are impatient, and the last thing you want to do is make vendors impatient."

Some on Wall Street such as BB&T Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba were disappointed to see Best Buy withdraw its outlook. The retailer cut its fiscal year earnings forecast without giving a figure and said it did not expect to further update its outlook for the year.

Chukumba said it was a "little bit jarring" to see the company withdraw its profit outlook, especially since he expects industry fundamentals to improve sequentially in the back half of the year, driven by the upcoming debuts of Windows 8, the iPhone 5, the Nintendo Wii U video game console, and a stronger videogame title release schedule.

Best Buy's problems have been compounded by "dinosaur (store) formats that we just don't need any longer," Widlitz said.

Critics have complained that Best Buy has become a showroom for Amazon.com Inc and other online retailers as shoppers go to its stores to check out electronics like high-definition televisions, then buy them elsewhere for less.

Ending the practice of showrooming is a top priority, Best Buy said in June.

The company has also said it is working to improve its online business and wants to reduce retail square footage further than a March plan to close 50 of its 1,100 large U.S. stores. Many investors were looking for deeper cuts to turn around the chain.

Best Buy's troubles have been exacerbated by the abrupt exit of CEO Brian Dunn due to an ethics probe.

The company is also fending off takeover interest from founder and largest shareholder Richard Schulze, who was forced out as chairman after an internal probe found that he did not inform the board of allegations that Dunn was having an inappropriate relationship with a female employee.

Best Buy shares closed down 1.38 percent at $17.91 on Tuesday afternoon, after sinking to a nine-year low of $16.25 earlier in the session.

The stock also fell on Monday following the announcement of new CEO Joly, who has headed hospitality and travel company Carlson but who lacks retail experience. In addition, takeover talks with Schulze deteriorated over the weekend.

Best Buy late on Tuesday said that Joly will receive a base salary of $1.175 million. He will also be eligible to receive a yearly cash bonus with a target rate of twice his base salary and significant stock awards.

Joly will also receive cash, stock and options worth up to $20 million over a three year period as compensation for benefits he left behind at Carlson.

If Best Buy sells itself, Joly could be eligible to receive a severance payment worth at least twice his base salary and target bonus.

COOLING CHINA

Sales at stores open at least 14 months fell 3.2 percent in the company's fiscal second quarter, ended August 4, the eighth decline in the last nine quarters. Same-store sales were down 1.6 percent in the United States and 8.2 percent internationally.

"China was even worse than Europe," Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser said, adding he had expected only a 3 percent drop for the international business.

"We're seeing continued weakness in the China consumer electronics market that appears to be consistent across major competitors," Best Buy Chief Financial Officer Jim Muehlbauer said.

Best Buy owns Five Star, which has 204 stores in China.

Suning and GOME, respectively China's No. 1 and 2 appliance retailers, have also talked about a slowdown in the Chinese economy.

Best Buy tied the weakness in China to lower consumer spending, weakness in the housing market and the expiration of government-sponsored rebate programs for appliances.

The markets in China and Europe were facing "enormous difficulties," Best Buy said.

Net income fell to $12 million, or 4 cents a share, in the second quarter, from $150 million, or 39 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding restructuring charges, it earned 20 cents a share, well short of the 31 cents expected on average by analysts, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales dropped 3 percent to $10.55 billion; analysts had estimated $10.63 billion.

The company, which bought back $122 million worth of shares in the quarter, said it has suspended repurchases for the current year as it goes through the transition to a new CEO.

Women Entrepreneurs who Mean Business Join the Big Idea ...

Novato, CA (PRWEB) October 2, 2008

The Big Idea Community (http://entrepreneur.meetup.com/1506/) is a dynamic environment, both online and in person, where women entrepreneurs learn from each other, share knowledge, and experience, expand creativity, and co-create something beyond the boundaries of individual imaginations. It was created in October 2007 by Robin Matuk, a solo entrepreneur struggling to launch her own company, who wanted to meet and learn from other like-minded, success-driven women. What started out as a small group of entrepreneurial women has grown to over 200 members!

?Participating in this group illustrates how it can be possible to build your own business, when you see others who are already doing it. You are forced to think outside the box and to receive different perspectives on your business idea. It?s also a great networking opportunity. And not the least of which, it?s a way for women to support each other in their various endeavors?, Marcia Basalla, Big Idea member since April 2008.

?I feel like I struck gold when I found the Big Idea Group! Something extraordinary happens when you get together with like minded, especially when the focus is on connecting with the truth, whatever that means to you. This group provides a very supportive environment for each person to feel good about where they?re at and to feel inspired to go forward and excel in what they love. I?m very impressed and I feel fortunate to be connected with you all through this group?, Christina Urso, Big Idea member since July 2008

The number of women owned businesses has increased by twice the rate of all other businesses in the past ten years. Between the years of 1997 and 2006, the number of women owned businesses has grown by 42% which is double that of other businesses at only 23%. According to Women?s Business Research, women business owners are significant players in the nation?s economy and their momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Technology has been a contributing factor to the development of women-owned businesses. Many women have been able to start their own home-based businesses with only a computer, an internet connection, a cell phone and a fax machine. New technology has helped the way America conducts business by offering more choices and many women entrepreneurs have taken advantage of these choices.

Along with inspiring monthly meetings, The Big Idea Community now offers new opportunities to start and grow a business by providing online access to information packed articles, e-books, podcasts, videos, checklists, templates, and worksheets all focused on starting, running and promoting your business, subscriptions to newsletters, blogs, podcast recordings, along with coaching sessions to brainstorm ideas, fine tune your niche and more.

?I wanted a comfortable place where women can come to learn about being an entrepreneur without having to pay a huge entrance fee or experience the aggressive networking that can happen and to meet cool women who are friendly business people?. Robin states.

About The Big Idea Community

The Big Idea is for any woman who wants to take the first steps to becoming an entrepreneur, any woman who already has a business but feels stuck and needs new and fresh ideas, or any woman who wants to take that business idea out of her head and turn it into reality. The community offers a calendar (http://entrepreneur.meetup.com/1506/calendar/past_list/) of exciting monthly meetings, inspiring special workshops, amazing VIP events, and helpful online resources. The collective wisdom of the group supports and inspires each woman.

Feminist of the Week: Amber Beilharz | Featured | Lip Magazine

Name: Amber Beilharz
Age:
24
Occupation:
Bed bug/Writer

How would you describe yourself and your life?
I grew up in the thin alleyways of Rozelle, Sydney, but Melbourne holds my blood-beat steady. I love miniature schnauzers, copious cups of tea, city landscapes and adventures of exploring new spaces and mostly having a laugh with the people I love. I have a Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing and a BA in Professional and Creative Writing.? At the moment my life is buffered by blogging poetry at www.metremaids.com with three stellar poets, friends and women from Texas, Beijing and London, as well as editing poetry at Voiceworks Magazine. In a very basic and broad way, I?m a writer, a lover, an editor, a feminist and I think that suffering (and I use suffering here without its negative edge) with MECFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) has taught me plenty about being a woman. Dealing with the how of being sick, has inversely taught me about how to liberate my body through looking after it.

What does Feminism mean to you?
I don?t feel as though I really had a grasp on feminism, physically and mentally before getting sick. Being ill has taught me how to delineate feminism as a type of spirituality. Feminism sits in me like a quasi-guardian. It lets me be free with my opinions and thoughts, instills a type of understanding that there?s an implicit need to create even surfaces between genders and sexualities. It gives me empathy beyond compassion. It teaches me that differences are beautiful and acceptable.

Do you think feminism has a place in today?s society?
Definitely, feminism has many stories, faces and voices. It still deserves to be heard with respect, but also spoken in a way that does not exclude men. Exclusion further exacerbates the issue. The way feminism has evolved is important to value, as women today still struggle with similar trends: being heard, treated equally in the workforce and financially and being able to express themselves through opinion, discussion and the way we represent ourselves, even in the way we dress. Coming back to this idea of looking after our bodies (question1), I think many issues are bodily: not being good enough, fit enough, the daily woes of pimples and puberty. Feminism is important to keep afloat to let girls and women know that it?s more than okay to celebrate the change of women and their bodies. That our bodies will constantly change and its something to cherish, as evidence of being alive.

Which feminist stereotype annoys you the most? Why?
The stereotype that feminism is only a FEMALE thing. I know heaps of men who subscribe to feminism thought and identify as feminists. I think it?s awesome that men can join a movement that was historically a women?s club. A man being a feminist does not make him lame, it makes him awesome. Also those stupid magazine articles that instruct and impose really shallow opinions on what not to do as a woman, or as a lover. Those kinds of columns feed off sexist stupidity.

If you could pass on one piece of advice to other feminists, what would it be?
Be who you are, constantly. Being genuine doesn?t come in jars.
Think and speak what you feel. Be unafraid of disagreements, but stand up for yourself when you feel you, as a woman you?re being devalued. Try to keep your ideas and views elastic, as these will always change and morph into stronger, sturdier structures. Also, look after yourself, the way you treat your body is a reflection on the way you treat yourself.

Do you have any feminist heroes? Who are they and why?
This is going to sound really cheesy but Beyonce! She teaches women not to be afraid of being fierce. She empowers women with her ability and desire to do good and be good. Plus she has killer curves and a powerful voice.

Mullen High School?s Sports Placed On Probation

DENVER (AP) ? High school football powerhouse Mullen High School has been placed on probation for one year following an investigation by the state athletic body.

The Denver Post reports that former head football coach Dave Logan was not the target of the investigation by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Logan had a 110-12 record and four state championships during nine years at Mullen before the school fired him in January. He is now the head coach at Cherry Creek High School.

CHSSA commissioner Paul Angelico in a statement issued Friday says the school has taken ?appropriate action to prevent a reoccurrence.? Details of the alleged violation were not released by CHSSA.

The school will be allowed to play in the postseason.

Liverpool suffer losing start, Arsenal held in Premiership

Liverpool crashed to a shock 3-0 defeat at West Brom in Brendan Rodgers' first Premier League match as Reds boss, while Arsenal started life without Robin van Persie with a dour 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Saturday.

Rodgers took over from Kenny Dalglish after Liverpool finished eighth last season, their worst final position for 18 years, and on the evidence of a shocking result at the Hawthorns the former Swansea manager still has plenty of work to do.

Rodgers, who gave debuts to new signings Joe Allen and Fabio Borini and left unsettled striker Andy Carroll on the bench, might have feared the worst when he saw Zoltan Gera blast Albion into the lead with a stunning 43rd-minute strike.

It was a sweet moment for Albion manager Steve Clarke, who was sacked by Liverpool at the end of last season after spending 18 months at Anfield as Dalglish's assistant.

Pepe Reina kept Liverpool in the match when he saved Shane Long's woeful second half penalty after Reds defender Daniel Agger was sent off for a professional foul.

But Albion won another penalty in the 64th minute and this time Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie stepped up to blast home.

And Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, rubbed salt into Liverpool's wounds when he marked his West Brom debut with a 77th-minute strike.

"Some decisions went against us. The sending off and penalties were very, very harsh I felt," Rodgers said.

"We will have more days like this along the way, that is the reality, but I could not ask any more from the players."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger saw his Gunners team fail to break down Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium in the first game since Dutch striker van Persie's ?24 million move to Manchester United.

Wenger gave debuts to Germany striker Lukas Podolski and Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla, while French forward Olivier Giroud, another new signing, came off the bench.

But the new boys were underwhelming, with Giroud missing the best chance of the afternoon.

"Playing three strikers didn't work. We had no space, and the passing was not quick enough so it was difficult for them," Wenger said.

"But it's one game and it's too early to draw definitive conclusions."

New Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas suffered a losing start as Newcastle won 2-1 at St James' Park in the day's late game.

Villas-Boas, sacked by Chelsea last season, saw Newcastle take the lead through Demba Ba's superb 54th-minute goal.

Jermain Defoe equalised with a close-range effort in the 76th minute, but Hatem Ben Arfa was hauled down by Aaron Lennon four minutes later and the French midfielder picked himself up to score the spot-kick.

West Ham enjoyed a winning return to the top flight as Sam Allardyce's side beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Upton Park in Paul Lambert's first game as Villa boss.

The Hammers, promoted via the Championship play-offs, took the points when Kevin Nolan sidefooted home in the 40th minute.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup savoured a five-star debut as new boy Michu inspired a 5-0 demolition of QPR at Loftus Road.

Michu, signed by Laudrup from Rayo Vallecano for ?2 million, took just eight minutes to score and the Spaniard struck again in the 53rd minute.

Nathan Dyer netted in the 63rd and 71st minutes and Scott Sinclair scored in the 81st minute.

Championship winners Reading rescued a 1-1 draw against Stoke at the Madejski Stadium on their return to the Premier League after a four-year absence.

Debutant Michael Kightly put Stoke ahead in the 34th minute thanks to a howler from Reading's Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici.

But Adam Le Fondre earned a point with a penalty in the 90th minute after Stoke midfielder Dean Whitehead was sent off.

At Craven Cottage, Fulham striker Mladen Petric showed there is life without Clint Dempsey as his debut double clinched a 5-0 win over Norwich.

With American forward Clint Dempsey reportedly on strike after his fall-out with the club over his desire to join Liverpool, Damien Duff set the ball rolling with the first goal in the 26th minute.

Petric, signed from Hamburg, increased the Cottagers' lead four minutes before half-time and he netted again with a deflected 54th minute strike.

Alex Kacaniklic struck in the 66th minute and Steve Sidwell's 87th minute penalty completed the rout.

On Sunday champions Manchester City host Southampton and Champions League winners Chelsea face Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Everton entertain Manchester United on Monday.

Relatives of Ellnora James witnessed her body tumbling from the casket onto the sidewalk in front of the Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church in November 2010, prompting the lawsuit against the Ivy K. Gillepsie Funeral Home. James? family members who did not witness Michigan funeral home staffers spill the casket learned something was amiss when asked if they could bring new clothing for the deceased, Fox News reports.

?This is the last time you get to show your respects for your loved ones. There was no respect and there was no dignity and there was no remorse for what happened,? Ellnora James? son Dean Libbett told WoodTV.

?I don?t know legally what I can and cannot say. We truly, truly, truly apologize,? Ivy K. Gillepsie Funeral Home representative Crystal Whittington stated after the settlement in the funeral home casket lawsuit.

The settlement was reached between the Ivy K. Gillepsie Funeral Home and the James? family in a Grand Rapids courtroom earlier this week. According to court excerpts republished by WoodTV, Ellnora James arrived inside the funeral home in a different casket and appeared to be ?slumped? inside. Ellnora James pre-planned her funeral and had selected the casket she wanted used in her memorial service. Despite the $80,000 settlement in the casket lawsuit, some family members are reportedly upset that the case did not go to trial.

Syria diversion: Passengers asked for fuel money

By The Associated Press

PARIS -- An emergency layover in Syria's war-torn capital was bad enough. Then passengers on Air France Flight 562 were asked to open their wallets to check if they had enough cash to pay for more fuel.?

The plane, heading from Paris to Lebanon's capital, diverted amid clashes near the Beirut airport on Wednesday. Low on fuel, it instead landed in Damascus, the capital of neighboring Syria, where a civil war is raging.

An Air France spokesman explained Friday that the crew inquired about passenger cash only as a "precautionary measure" because of the "very unusual circumstances."

?Sanctions against Syria complicated payment for extra fuel.?

He said Air France found a way to pay for the fill-up without tapping customer pockets ? and apologized for the inconvenience.?

The plane landed safely in Beirut.

Take Good Care Of Your Home By Using These Plumbing Tips ...

It is common for people to believe that plumbing repairs are hard. It is easier if you have the proper knowledge and advice to do this job. This article has lots of tips to help you with your plumbing needs.

Use strainers on all drains to keep foreign objects and debris from clogging drains. Kitchen sink strainers should be cleaned every time they collect large food particles. Keep the bathroom drains cleaned out too.

Water that drains back into your dishwasher is likely due to an improper sink hook up. The hose connecting the sink the the dishwasher should be at an uphill angle and then downhill to prevent the water from mixing.

Always have cold water running when you are using your garbage disposal. The cold water keeps your blades sharp, which helps your disposal run smooth. Using hot water will cause grease to liquefy and accumulate in the drain, which will cause clogs in your pipes.

When connecting pipes, over-tightening is just as damaging as under-tightening a pipe! You can damage threads and run the risk of cracking the pipe; make sure to tighten it just enough to stop leaks, not more.

There are a variety of skills related to plumbing, not just ones that have to do with water. Plumbers fix water lines, install water heaters and help customers choose fixtures.

If there are signs of water leaking inside your walls, you must turn off the water supply immediately and contact a plumber. This may mean you have serious plumbing problems. One result could be the growth of mildew and mold. A large leak could result in your house actually flooding.

Take advantage of the information that you can obtain from the department or division of your state government that handles consumer affairs and protection when you are thinking of hiring a plumbing contractor. You will be able to check their license and know if people have complained about this specific contractor. Do not hire a plumber with a license that is not in good standing.

A flood alarm can be a good investment in a home plumbing system. Flood alarms work on the same principle as smoke alarms. When water comes in contact with a flood alarm, it sounds an alarm. A flood alarm can make you aware of leaks in your home or a potential flood.

Prevention is vital for avoiding costly repairs to your plumbing. Drain clogging is a very common plumbing problem. You can clog your drains with hair. A great way to help prevent those clogs is to install a screen on top of the drain. Just make sure that it properly fits your drain. It?s more convenient to remove hair before it has a chance to get down the drain and into the pipes.

As was discussed at the beginning of the article, while plumbing can be an extremely difficult chore for anyone to complete, it becomes significantly easier if you have the right advice and information. Use the advice from this article, and you?ll be on your way to doing your own plumbing.

Are you having problems with blocked drain?

Moffitt Cancer Center researchers validate molecular signature to ...

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, working with colleagues in Sweden, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico, have validated a radiosensitivity molecular signature that can lead to better radiation therapy decisions for treating patients with breast cancer.

The results appeared in a recent issue of Clinical Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The study examined patients with breast cancer who had been treated with radiation therapy and demonstrated that a radiosensitivity molecular signature (RSI) could predict clinical outcomes exclusively in patients treated with radiation therapy. The radiosensitivity molecular signature (RSI) used by the research team had previously been tested and validated for rectal, esophageal, and head and neck cancers. The technology, which identifies radiosensitivity and radioresistance, opens the door to biologically guided radiation therapy and offers the potential for better outcomes.

"Developing a radiosensitivity predictive assay has been a goal of radiation biology for decades," said Javier F. Torres-Roca, M.D., member of the Experimental Therapeutics program at Moffitt. "This effort supports the emphasis on personalized medicine, where the goal is to use molecular signatures to guide therapeutic decisions."

According to Torres-Roca, approximately 60 percent of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy during their treatment. Yet until now, no molecular diagnostic or biomarker of radiosensitivity had been developed to predict its benefit.

The radiosensitivity molecular signature was developed based on gene expression for 10 specific genes and a linear regression algorithm. RSI was developed in 48 cancer cell lines using a systems-biology strategy focused on identifying biomarkers for cellular radiosensitivity.

This study validated RSI's benefit when researchers found that radiosensitive breast cancer patients had an improved five-year, relapse-free survival when compared to radioresistant patients.

"This study validated RSI in 503 patients in two independent data sets," Torres-Roca said. "We have validated RSI in five independent cohorts totaling 621 patients, so this latest validation study, to the best of our knowledge, makes this technology the most extensively validated molecular signature in radiation oncology."

The successful transition from applying the technology to cell lines to patient application also suggests that the biological basis of cellular radiosensitivity is conserved between cell lines and patients and also across epithelial tumors, Torres-Roca said.

"We propose that RSI is a predictive biomarker of radiation therapy therapeutic benefit for patients with breast cancer," Torres-Roca said. "This novel biomarker provides an opportunity to integrate individual tumor biology with clinical decision-making in radiation oncology."

Dozens die in illegal mine shaft collapse in Congo

By NBC News wire services

KINSHASA, Congo -- At least 60 miners were killed when a shaft collapsed in a remote part of northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where local armed groups complicated rescue efforts, officials said Thursday.

The local miners were digging for gold in shafts up to 300 feet underground when the accident occurred on Monday in Mambasa territory in Orientale Province, said Simon Pierre Bolombo, the provincial head of mines.

He said the collapse had been caused by a landslide.

"It was deep in the forest, there was a landslide, at least 60 people have been killed," Bolombo told Reuters by telephone from the town of Bunia in northeast Congo.

The eastern region of Congo has been suffering from drenching rain in recent days, prompting a visit by U.N.?humanitarian?chief?Baroness Valerie Amos.

Illegal mine
Congo's minister of mines, Martin Kabwelulu, told Reuters the workers were there illegally and that their shafts were deeper than the 32-yard limit required by the code for small-scale mining.

The area where the mine is situated is currently in the hands of a local rebel group -- known as Mai Mai Morgan -- which will likely hamper any rescue efforts, Bolombo said.

"(The mine) is controlled by the rebels. ... There's almost total insecurity, it's difficult for us (to reach)," he added.

Mining companies AngloGold Ashanti and Randgold operate in the region, which is known to be rich in tin and gold, although the accident did not take place on either company's concession, officials said.

'Conflict minerals'
Congo, a vast country in central Africa, is mired in poverty. The country has been scarred by decades of dictatorship and war. Many Congolese try to eke out a living through small-scale mining, a dangerous and unregulated practice.

Accidents are common in open-pit mines, where there are few if any safety precautions. Hundreds of thousands of people work in unsafe conditions, some of them forced to mine by some of the armed groups and government soldiers who illegally profit from Congo's massive mineral resources.

Armed groups across eastern Congo use illegal and small-scale mining to help fund their activities, despite international attempts to stamp out so-called "conflict minerals."

Push for cleanly sourced minerals
A report this week by the?Washington-based Enough Project that ranked?companies on conflict minerals said leading tech companies have proven it is possible to invest in cleanly sourced minerals from Congo that benefit local communities instead of armed groups.?

The report praised?Intel, Motorola Solutions, HP and Apple as "pioneers of progress," but gave Nintendo zero points for making "no known effort."

Companies have been responding to U.S. legislation demanding clean supply chains and to increasing consumer activism.

The group also gave high points to Philips, ACER, Dell and Microsoft. Among poor performers it ranks HTC, Sharp, Nikon and Canon. They could not immediately be reached for comment.

Elizabeth Scheu Close: A Tribute | Metropolis POV | Metropolis ...

Created with Admarket?s flickrSLiDR.

On a hot June afternoon, dozens of us gathered to celebrate what would have been Elizabeth Scheu Close?s 100th birthday. The first woman architect in Minnesota dedicated to a modernist aesthetic, Lisl, as everyone called her, died at the age of 99 on November 29, 2011, a day when the design world lost a little of its buoyancy, a little of its tenacity.

The memorial at the First Unitarian Society on Mount Curve in Minneapolis, was just down the street from one of the largest of the over 300 homes she and her architect husband, Winston Close, had designed. The chamber ensemble Artaria String Quartet performed. After all, Lisl and Win were accomplished amateur musicians, playing the cello and viola, respectively. In between compositions by Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Hayden, friends, family and historians fleshed out her life with flourish. Words like ?remarkable,? ?skilled,? ?brilliant,? and ?disciplined? resonated.

Hill. ?It is known as the Lippincott house and still stands. ?It is across the street from Franlk Lloyd Wrights 1934 Willey House. ?This is the first house Win and Lisl designed after going out on their own. Photo by Tom Trow.

Although Lisl was near legend in the Twin Cities design community, I did not meet her until the fall of 1997.? Win, her husband and professional partner of nearly 60 years, had died that summer. At age 85, Lisl instinctively commanded the space around her. She was a force of nature. Petite, she stood straight, was articulate, flashed intelligence and light animated her eyes. I knew instantly she did not suffer fools lightly ? if at all.

Lisl?s life was indeed storied. More than one person has commented that ?she seemed to have it all? ? great lineage, talent, professional acclaim, a respected husband, three accomplished children, and a passion for creativity and travel.? On June 4, 1912, she was born Elizabeth Scheu into a cultured and politically progressive family in Vienna, Austria. Her grandfather, Josef Scheu, was a co-founder of the Austrian Social Democratic Party and composed one if its best known anthems, the ?Song of Work.?? Her father, Gustav Scheu, was a lawyer and city councilor who was aligned with the Garden City Movement and active in Vienna?s post-WWI housing reform movement. Her mother, Helene Scheu-Riesz, was a writer, editor, and publisher of children?s books, and a Quaker.

Gustav, an intellectual, commissioned Adolf Loos in 1912 to design the family home; the now celebrated Scheu House, which still stands. The first flat-roofed house in Vienna and Loos? first terraced residential structure, the Scheu House was a destination point for left-leaning intellectuals who arrived from across Europe and the United States. Studying architectural history in college I was riveted by the Scheu?s austere design set-off by ivy covered walls.

That Lisl pursued architecture in college is not surprising. But after two years at Vienna?s Technische Hochschule she found the instructors sexist and unpleasant. She then applied and was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gustav?s friend, Edward Filene of Filene?s Department Store, paid her passage to Boston where she received her BArch in 1934 and her MArch in 1935. It was in graduate school, where she was the only woman in the program, that she met fellow student Win Close, a native of Appleton, Minnesota.

After graduating, Win quickly secured a job at the Minneapolis firm of Magney and Tusler but it was not so easy for Lisl.? Architecture firms determined she would be a distraction. ?Richard Neutra agreed to hire her, but only if she paid him $20 per month. Finally Philadelphia architect Oscar Stonorov hired her to design public housing.

In 1936 Win called with news of an opening at Magney and Tusler; she applied, was hired and moved to Minneapolis. Two years later Lisl and Win started their own firm, first Close and Scheu Architects, later Close Associates, Inc., owned by architect and principal Gar Hargans since 1988. (As an architecture student at the U of Minnesota, Gar first worked at Close Associates in 1965.) Three months later they married over their lunch hour, heading directly back to the office because there was work to do. (It has been noted that she would rather not have married, but in 1938 Minneapolis it would have been scandalous to live and run a business together.) Following war duty in the Navy, the U of M hired Win to teach architecture and be the in-house campus advisory architect, which he did until 1971. This left Lisl as principal designer of Close Associates, and she thrived.

Dedicated to a no-frills modernism, Lisl and Win?s design practice included homes, public and private housing projects, medical facilities, and the Gray Freshwater Biological Institute on Lake Minnetonka, in Navarre Minnesota. Their structures are characterized by flat or gently sloping roofs, generous amounts of wood countered by brick or cinder block, an abundance of glazing, open floor plans and an obvious functionality. Free from ornament, Lisl once quipped, ?I don?t do pendentives.? (Pendentives are the triangular, structural/vaulting elements in the corner of a room that usual support a dome on top. ?Think Hagia Sophia.? Or a baroque dining room.) A Close home was also an affordable home.

Lisl constantly visited her construction sites, wearing a hardhat and sturdy shoes. She gained the contractors? respect immediately, but it was rumored they were secretly terrified of her. In 1969 they were both elected Fellows of the AIA? he first husband-and-wife team so honored. In 2002, at 90, Lisl received AIA Minnesota?s Gold Medal, a lifetime achievement award.

In early 1998 I visited Lisl at the home she and Win had designed for themselves in 1953. Located in The Grove, a University of Minnesota enclave of winding roads near the Saint Paul campus, all Grove homes had to be architect-designed and were for faculty and staff. The Closes designed 14. A two-story, flat-roofed structure built into a gentle hillside, the home was constructed of redwood, glass, brick and cinderblock and is a blueprint of their modernist aesthetic. Entering a ground level foyer of redwood paneling, one ascends a steel spiral staircase made by Win (the Scheu house has a spiral staircase) to the second floor living space with views of lawn and gardens through a long wall of large windows. Here they raised three children.?One, the landscape architect Bob Close, now lives in the home with his wife.

On this first of several visits, I was stuck by the grand piano in the living room. I asked if it was from the Scheu House in Vienna. With a piercing look she inquired why I asked.? I answered that I remembered it from photographs of the Scheus? Richardsonian interiors in architectural history books I studied in college.? She said ?yes,? with just a slight nod of approval. She gave me a thorough tour of the home and in a second bedroom; her cello and Win?s viola lay next to each other on twin beds.

That summer, I drove Lisl to Skywater, an ensemble of two cabins, originally designed for the University of Minnesota English professor, Joseph Beach and his wife Dagmar, who had christened the cabin Skywater. I was writing an article about the place and its furniture for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. More than an hour?s drive from the Twin Cities, we had time to chat. Designed in 1941, Skywater is a two-room, sod-roofed cabin perched 150 feet above the stunningly beautiful St. Croix River on the Wisconsin bluffs. The Beaches had given the Closes $1,200 to design and build the cabin, and threw in another $50 for furnishings, all to be completed over the summer while they were on sabbatical at Harvard. Undaunted by only $50 for kitchen items, bedding and furniture, Win and Lisl designed and constructed a game/dining table, stool and chair from fir plywood. The chair backs were strung clothesline. (Reproductions of the furniture can be purchased through the?Minnesota Historical Society.) Nearby a second cabin on stilts was built in 1963. When the Beach family decided to sell Skywater in the early 1970s, they offered it to Win and Lisl who could not refuse.

At Skywater, the canopy was so dense the river could only be imagined far below.? After the newspaper photographer left Lisl told me ? instructed me ? to make the descent and take a swim on that hot August day.? She handed me a towel and told me to go skinny-dipping if I?d forgotten my suit, which she had told me to bring. I protested lightly, but with a wave of her hand she said, ?I don?t get to be here alone very often.?? Off I went. Swimming in the cool clear water, looking up at the blue sky, I thought of Lisl growing up in the Scheu house some 80 years earlier and that now she was on the Skywater deck overlooking the St. Croix River valley.? Some life.

At the close of Lisl?s memorial gathering, with a little coaching, we stood and sang ? some of us in German - Josef Scheu?s Lied der Arbeit, Song of Work, with words by Josef Zapf.? Of the original ten versus, now only the first and last are usually sung. The final verse ends, ?So call out: ?Work, it preserves, it?s work that moves the world!? Three cheers for work!? Three cheers for work!?? Indeed,Lisl Close had work down. Afterwards, with glasses raised, we toasted the first woman architect in the Twin Cities with a modernist vision.

LHC primordial matter is hottest stuff ever made

It was the ultimate phase change. Two particle smashers are homing in on what caused the seething primordial soup of the early universe to evolve into the protons and neutrons that make up ordinary matter today. In the process one has set a new record: the hottest temperature ever created by humans.

Microseconds after the big bang, the hot universe consisted of a kind of soup in which quarks roamed free instead of being bound together in atoms as they are today. This almost frictionless quark-gluon plasma has been recreated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, by smashing gold ions together. Their plasma reached 4?trillion??C.

Now a team at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which smashes lead ions together, have made a plasma almost 40 per cent hotter. At the Quark Matter 2012 conference in Washington DC on 13 August, they reported that their quark-gluon plasma had reached over 5?trillion??C, the hottest temperature ever created in an experiment.

Boundary emerging

"In this field records are made to be broken," says Jurgen Schukraft at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. The first hint of a record came in November 2010, when the LHC first collided lead ions, but it took two years to actually measure it, Schukraft says.

The RHIC researchers aren't out of the game, though. What they really want to know is at what energies the quark-gluon plasma switches to normal matter.

At the Quark Matter conference, RHIC's Steven Vigdor described how his team systematically varied the energy to create primordial plasma under a broad range of conditions.

He says initial measurements are delineating a boundary between ordinary matter and primordial stuff. "We are looking further back into the universe than ever before," says Vigdor.
