Crying Out Now: Drinking and Motherhood - A Mom Wants To Get ...

***Submitted by Anonymous

I decided this morning that I must make a change in my life before something bad happens.??

I have an awesome husband who would do anything for me and three perfect children who want nothing more than to be with me and I am screwing it all up because I drink way too much.??

I have always loved to drink since college but I would always binge drink.??

When I was doing this with my friends I never thought much about it being a problem, even still when we get together we all drink too much.?

I cut down in my thirties but as soon as I had kids after each one was born I was right back on the booze and with each one it became so much?worse.??

Since the last one came along I have steadily become a daily drinker and within the past few months it is quite scary.??

I know my husband knows it is a problem but it is like he doesn't want to say anything to me about it.? I am always scared that I have ruined my health but more importantly my relationship with my kids.?

???

I work out daily, I run marathons, I am involved in all of the kids activities but as soon as we are home safely I start drinking immediately to "cope"? but the weird thing is that all my life I wanted to be married and have kids so now why do I have to drink to "cope"???????

I am stopping today or I am afraid I will not be around to see my kids grow up.?

I just can't do this anymore it is too exhausting to get up each day and face myself in the mirror with shame and guilt and I know my kids know even though they are young.

Cynthia Carroll to step down as Anglo-American CEO

(AP) ? Cynthia Carroll will step down as chief executive of mining company Anglo American PLC after almost six years in the job, the company announced Friday.

Carroll, who is to leave the company as soon as a successor is found, made no reference to reports that some investors had lost faith in her leadership following a series of controversial events including a series of strikes in South Africa and a dispute in Chile. Earlier this month, the rating service Standard & Poor's lowered its outlook on the company from "stable" to "negative" because of the turmoil in South Africa.

"Of course, we always listen to our shareholders very carefully. However, today's decision is very much based on Cynthia's decision," Anglo's chairman John Parker said in a video interview posted on www.cantos.com .

Anglo American shares opened 1.8 percent higher in London at 1,890 pence.

In an video interview posted on, Anglo chairman John Parker

Carroll, a 55-year-old American, was appointed chief executive in 2007. She was the first non-South African and first woman to lead the company.

"It is a very difficult decision to leave, but next year I will be entering my seventh year as chief executive and I feel that the time will be right to hand over to a successor who can build further on the strong foundations we have created," she said.

Trained as a geologist, Carroll started her career with Amoco. She joined Alcan in 1989, rising in 2002 to the posts of president and chief executive officer of Alcan's primary metals group.

Carroll will also be stepping down from her roles as chairman of De Beers, an appointment announced earlier this month, and of Anglo American Platinum.

Anglo American posted a record operating profit of $11.1 billion in 2011. In that year it paid $5.1 billion for the Oppenheimer family's 40 percent stake in De Beers, raising Anglo's stake to 85 percent.

In the first half of this year, operating profit slumped by 38 percent and net profit fell 70 percent as the group was hit by lower commodity prices and higher costs.

Anglo's market capitalization has fallen more than 25 percent since Carroll joined the company, the Financial Times said.

Anglo American also became embroiled in a dispute with Chile when it announced in 2011 that it had agreed to sell its 24.5 percent stake in Anglo American Sur, its copper assets in Chile, to Mitsubishi for $5.4 billion. That sale was challenged by Codelco, Chile's state-owned copper miner, which had an option to take a 49 percent stake.

Codelco and Anglo American resolved the dispute in August as Anglo reduced its holding in AA Sur from 75.5 percent to 50.1 percent, while a Codelco-Mitsui joint venture took a 29.5 percent interest.

Anglo American's operations in South Africa have been set back by labor unrest since September, when more than 10,000 miners at Anglo American Platinum's operations outside Johannesburg went on strike demanding 16,000 rand (about $1,800) in monthly pay.

Amplats, the world's top producer of platinum, insisted the strike is illegal.

The company fired 12,000 workers en masse earlier this month, drawing condemnation from the influential Congress of South Africa Trade Unions, COSATU. COSATU has called for a massive street protest Saturday in support of the dismissed workers, who have threatened to make the company's operations ungovernable if they are not reinstated.

Mpumi Sithole, a spokeswoman for Amplats, said Thursday that the company stands by its decision to fire the workers.

Tax Issues in Retirement

When you?re making your retirement plans, it can be easy to overlook one thing: taxes in the golden years. It?s important to remember that just because you are retiring doesn?t mean that you no longer owe taxes to the IRS. Here are the tax issues you will want to plan for during your retirement:

Remember the Taxes You Deferred in the IRA and 401(k)?

Many retirees will be counting on these retirement plans for at least a portion of their retirement income. But don?t forget that you have not yet paid taxes on your contributions to your traditional IRA accounts and 401(k) plans. These tax-deferred plans do not owe money to Uncle Sam until you withdraw the funds.

Of course, one of the benefits of these retirement plans is the ability to defer taxes. The withdrawals are taxed at the same rates as ordinary income, although deferring taxes is generally still in your best interest. In most cases, you will be in a higher tax bracket when you earn the money that you put into your tax-deferred retirement account than you will be when you withdraw the money. However, the IRS requires you to withdraw certain amounts from your tax-deferred accounts when you turn 70? and every year thereafter, so you cannot defer your withdrawal (and your taxes) indefinitely.

Roth IRAs are different from the traditional type, in that you put post-tax dollars in them, meaning you owe the IRS nothing when you withdraw money.

Social Security May Be Taxed Too

If you are counting entirely on Social Security income in retirement, then you will likely not owe any taxes on that money. However, if you have additional sources of retirement income ? like an IRA, a pension plan, investment income, or even a job or freelance work ? up to 85% of your Social Security benefits could be taxed.

The IRS considers three things when determining the taxes on your Social Security benefits: your adjusted gross income plus half of your Social Security benefits plus any tax-free income you have. If the sum of those three amounts is greater than $34,000 for an individual or $44,000 for a married couple filing jointly, then you will have to pay tax on your government benefits.

You are able to pay your taxes on your Social Security benefits in two ways: either by making estimated tax payments quarterly, or by having tax withheld from your benefit checks.

Investments

A common strategy for avoiding taxes on investments is to invest in municipal bonds, since the interest grows tax-free. However, tax-free investment income adds to the likelihood that you will have to pay taxes on your Social Security benefits. Putting your investment money in a tax-sheltered annuity will allow you to keep more of your government benefits, since it is not included in the formula for determining Social Security tax. But be careful here. Annuities are costly, which makes them very unattractive investments for many people.

The Bottom Line

A good retirement plan will include provisions for dealing with taxes. If you have put no thought into what your tax burden will be after you retire, it?s time to call your financial advisor and make these important provisions now.

Samsung CLX-3305FW

Arguably small enough to share a desk with, the Samsung CLX-3305FW ($400 street) can be a good fit as either a personal color laser MFP or a shared MFP in a micro office. It's a little slow for a laser, and it offers limited paper capacity, but both its speed and paper handling are good enough for light-duty printing. And although it's a little pricey for what it delivers, it can certainly do the job it is meant for.

Aside from its relatively slow speed, the CLX-3305FW has a lot in common with the Editors' Choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer . Like the Dell printer, it can print, scan, and fax, including over a network; it can work as standalone copier and fax machine; and it can scan to and print from a USB memory key.

As with the Dell 1355cnw also, the CLX-3305FW offers a letter-size flatbed supplemented by an automatic document feeder (ADF). However, the CLX-3305FW's ADF offers a higher capacity, at 40 pages. More significant is that both printers offer the same meager paper handling for printing, with a 150-sheet input tray and no duplexer (for two-sided printing), which is what limits both to light-duty use.

Both printers also offer both Ethernet and Wi-Fi network support. One nice extra for the CLX-3305FW is that it adds Wi-Fi Direct, which makes it easy to connect directly to a smart phone, tablet, or laptop.

Setup and Speed
Another key feature that the CLX-3305FW shares with the Dell 1355cnw is its small size, with a footprint that actually takes up less desk space than many inkjets. At 13.1 by 16.0 by 14.3 inches (HWD) it's a touch smaller than the Dell printer in every dimension. It's also light enough, at 30.8 pounds, for one person to move easily.

Setup was absolutely standard, although a few details differed enough from the steps in the Quick Start guide to be confusing. Samsung says this was only because the printer it provided for review had been previously used, which means that with a new printer you shouldn't run into the discrepancies I saw.

For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed the drivers and other software on a Windows Vista system. As I've already mentioned, the speed was relatively slow. Samsung rates the printer at 19 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome and 4 ppm for color, which are the speeds you should see when printing text files or other documents that don't require much processing. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 3.3 ppm.

Samsung CLX-3305FW

That makes the CLX-3305FW significantly slower than the Dell 1355cnw, at 4.5 pages per minute, and far slower than, for example, the Ricoh Aficio SP C240SF , at 6.3 ppm. It's not even hard to find inkjets with faster speed. The best that can be said for this level of performance is that the speed is well within a tolerable range for light-duty printing.

Output and Other Issues

The CLX-3305FW's output quality is in pretty much the same class as its speed: not impressive, but not a serious weakness. Given its par-quality graphics and slightly below-par text and photos, it's a touch below par overall for a color laser MFP, but still more than acceptable for any business use.

Text is a little short of what I'd insist on for serious desktop publishing, but more than good enough for any other business need. Graphics output is easily good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts. If you're not too much of a perfectionist, you may well consider the text, graphics, and photos useable even for basic marketing materials like tri-fold brochures.

One other issue I ran into came up only after I finished all my official tests and turned the printer back on for one quick ad hoc test. The printer woke up with an error message on the front panel LCD telling me to change the waste toner tank, and refusing to print.

What makes this potentially significant is that I saw a similar error message on another Samsung printer I recently tested that uses the same printer engine. However, this appears to be a problem with how these two printers were shipped rather than a serious problem with the design or manufacture. Both of the test units had been previously used, and were shipped without the plastic foam piece meant to hold the toner cartridges and waste tank in place. According to Samsung, without that packing material, the cartridges and tank can shift during shipment and damage the waste tank sensor. Samsung also says it has not seen this problem in shipping units.

In any case, assuming that the waste toner tank issue is not a real problem, the Samsung CLX-3305FW qualifies as a reasonable choice for the personal or micro office use it's designed for. It's a little pricey for what it delivers, but it's also one of the few color laser MFPs that's small enough to sit on your desk without dominating it. More important, both the speed and paper handling are suitable for light duty use, the output quality is good enough for almost any business purpose, and the printer delivers all the MFP features most individuals or micro offices need.

Boeing missile takes out electronics without touching them

2 hrs.

A new weapon being developed by Boeing hopes to defeat targets without actually destroying them. Instead, it uses a powerful microwave burst to disable electronic devices as it flies overhead.

The idea of the "electro-magnetic pulse," or EMP, is a popular one in science fiction: for decades, guns and missiles have disabled starships and facilities by shutting down their electronics ? but the real thing has proven a bit more difficult to create.

Researchers at Boeing's Phantom Works succeeded last week when tests of their new weapon proved it to be even more potent than expected. They call it the Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP.

The tests in Utah had the missile buzzing test structures full of electronics and cameras. The idea is that targeting these buildings with an intense burst of microwave radiation would knock out any electronically-controlled systems within.

And that's what happened ? in spades. The CHAMP worked so well that even the cameras set up to record the effects inside the buildings were shut down. Such a weapon would be invaluable against enemy infrastructure like radar and missile launch sites.

How long the electronics are disrupted for would vary widely depending on how the electronics work and?how hard they were hit. The monitors shown in the video at Boeing's announcement of the tests only shut down for a few seconds, but something more complex, like?an interdependent network of computers and power sources, could be taken offline for much longer or even disabled completely.

Either way, the CHAMP was demonstrated successfully, and it will be a very useful tool when ordinary munitions are too risky to employ. The research was conducted in partnership with the U.S.?Air Force Research Laboratory and Raytheon Ktech.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

(AP) ? Linebacker Sean Lee, the leading tackler for the Dallas Cowboys, has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season because of a right big toe injury.

Coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday an MRI showed ligament damage that will require surgery in the next week or so, ending hopes of Lee returning in four to six weeks.

Lee also calls the defensive signals for the Cowboys. The Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Ernie Sims, who played 13 games last year for Indianapolis.

Dan Connor, a free agent addition in the offseason, took most of Lee's playing time in the second half of last week's 19-14 win at Carolina. Connor is listed as a starter alongside Bruce Carter in the middle of the Dallas defense, with Sims backing up Connor.

Garrett said he expects Lee's leadership role to shift from the field to the sideline when the New York Giants visit Sunday.

"I can't tell you how well he's been playing since he's been our starting inside linebacker," Garrett said. "He's a bell cow for us and a guy that really everybody on our defense and football team looks up to."

Lee missed a game and a half last year with a dislocated wrist and played several games in a cast.

The Cowboys moved up in the draft to take Lee in the second round out of Penn State in 2010. He started 15 games last year, finishing with 105 tackles and tying for the team lead with four interceptions. He had 58 tackles in six games this year and another interception.

"A lot of teams around this league have had significant injuries to significant players," Garrett said. "This is not new. This has happened a lot. And you rally around it."

Dallas also put punter Chris Jones on injured reserve and signed safety Charlie Peprah. The Cowboys added linebacker Jerry Brown to the practice squad a week after he was let go by Indianapolis.

(AP) ? They were supposed to sail the Argentine military's signature tall ship into the port of Buenos Aires in full glory after a goodwill tour asserting the South American country's place in the world.

Instead, hundreds of sailors had to abandon their frigate, evacuated on orders from President Cristina Fernandez, after the ARA Libertad was detained by a Ghanaian judge in a debt dispute.

Frustrated and disheartened but determined to go back as soon as possible to retrieve their three-masted ship, the sailors arrived home early Thursday on an Air France charter. The Argentine government couldn't send one of its own planes, for fear that it, too, could be seized as collateral.

It appears the Libertad may be stuck indefinitely in Ghana, since Fernandez refuses to negotiate with NML Capital Ltd., an investment fund demanding more than $300 million from the Argentines to pay off bonds that went into default during the country's devastating economic crisis a decade ago.

"They had to leave it there without a ceremony, without anything. As a member of the military, that makes me a bit sad," Paola Garcia said as she waited for her husband, crew member Maximiliano Alegre. Both are navy captains and committed to Argentina's military. He left on the Libertad's latest tour June 2, the day before the birth of their first child, Abril.

"As a mother and a wife, I'm content that they're coming home. But as part of the military, we're sad to leave the frigate with just a few crew members there. I don't know what they're going to do ? it's our only frigate and I don't know if we're going to lose it or what," Garcia said.

Alegre teared up as he met his tiny daughter on arrival. Asked about the Libertad, he simply rolled his eyes.

"We're accustomed to moments that aren't always pleasant, but that's what we're trained for," said the ship's second-in-command, Carlos Maria Allievi.

Allievi said the ship's captain and 43 crew members were left behind with the ship at Ghana's Tema Port.

Their first task may be to move the Libertad to a less desirable berth at the busy port, where authorities have complained that it is blocking prime dock space and causing costly delays.

NML Capital is a subsidiary of billionaire Paul Singer's Elliott Capital Management fund, which has demanded payment in full plus interest for its share of the $100 billion in bonds that Argentina defaulted on a decade ago.

The vast majority of bondholders settled for 30 cents on the dollar, but Singer held out and has become Argentina's worst enemy by filing suits around the world to embargo the country's assets. NML Capital told the judge it would accept $20 million in exchange for allowing the three-masted ship to set sail.

Singer's companies are registered in Cyprus and the Cayman Islands, but he's based in New York, where he has become a leading donor to the Republican Party and its presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Argentina has described him as a financial pirate who hides his wealth in fiscal paradises and runs "vulture funds" that prey on developing nations.

"As long as I am president, they can keep the frigate, but no one will take the liberty, sovereignty and dignity of this country ? not a vulture fund, not anyone," Fernandez declared this week.

Fernandez has about three more years to go in her second term.

Neither NML Capital nor Elliot Capital Management has commented on the case, but a lobbying organization Singer supports in Washington, the American Task Force Argentina, has said that Fernandez's actions, or lack thereof, are deeply damaging to her nation's reputation and economy.

First Capt. Ariel Bejarano said he's deeply saddened to be evacuated, "because I love Argentina, I love the frigate, and for me this is really hard to bear. We have to recover it."

There was no sign of any government officials waiting at the airport to greet the returning sailors, but double-decker buses were lined up to carry those without waiting families to a navy base, where the Argentine military planned to hold a ceremony Thursday.

Citizens of a half-dozen South American nations who had joined the crew were then expected to fly home.

Obama or Romney: Whose debt reduction plan does history favor?

The two presidential candidates would pursue different paths to lead the US out of debt. Here's how debt-saddled countries of yore have dealt ? successfully and unsuccessfully ? with the problem, and how those lessons might apply today.

When President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney make their pitch to voters on how they'd tame the nation's debt and grow the economy, each suggests history is on his side.

It's partly campaign rhetoric, but it represents a substantive point: The way forward for the US economy will be smoother if the nation takes appropriate cues from the experiences of other countries ? and from its own past.

What are those lessons? The candidates have eagerly shared a few.

Mr. Obama notes that he arrived in office with the nation already in "the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression," a kind of contextual asterisk reminding voters to have patience on the road to recovery.

He also tells voters that a Romney presidency would return America to a failed Bush-era vision "that got us into this mess," a reference in part to policies that added to the federal debt while keeping taxes low for the rich.

And he refers to the policies of Abraham Lincoln, arguing that investments in education and infrastructure make government a contributor to economic growth, not an inhibitor.

Former Massachusetts Governor Romney says his tax reform would follow Ronald Reagan's 1986 approach, in which lower tax rates buoyed job growth, while limits on deductions helped ensure adequate federal revenue. And in the first presidential debate of the season, he pointed to the current financial crisis in Europe to make his case for big spending cuts.

"Spain spends 42 percent of their total economy on government. We're now spending 42 percent of our economy on government. I don't want to go down the path to Spain," he said.

So what are the most salient lessons history teaches about emerging from a deep slump ? one attended by banking woes and rising debt? This story will highlight three broad lessons.

First, some general points to set the scene:

? Although America's economic path has been rough over the past four years, the United States isn't doing badly compared with other instances when recession has been accompanied by troubles in the financial system. Charts comparing various "financial recessions" at home and abroad suggest the recent US course is typical. This still leaves room for interpretation when it comes to Obama's track record. Some can say that he missed opportunities to kindle a faster recovery, others that the economy has done better on his watch than he's been given credit for. In fact, both points may be true.

? When it comes to the way forward, Obama and Romney have similarities as well as differences. Although Romney calls for a cap on government spending at 20 percent of gross domestic product and Obama does not, both candidates have voiced support for reducing federal deficits. That hints at another similarity: Neither is calling for the kind of stimulative fiscal policy next year that many economists recommend.

? Forecasters generally expect things to get better over the next four years ? and for federal deficits to fall ? no matter who is elected. The job market is improving, and US households have made substantial progress in "deleveraging" after heavy borrowing during the housing boom, both of which should buoy the economy's consumer sector. A big caveat: Europe's debt crisis and America's "fiscal cliff" (expiring tax cuts and new curbs on spending) cloud the outlook.

Court stays execution of schizophrenic Fla. man

Florida Department of Corrections via AP

John Errol Ferguson has been on Florida's death row for 34 years.

By The Associated Press

An 11th hour decision by a federal appeals court has blocked the scheduled execution of a mass killer convicted of eight slayings that jolted South Florida in the 1970s.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a last-minute request Tuesday night from attorneys for 64-year-old John Errol Ferguson, who has been on Florida's death row for 34 years. Ferguson's lawyers contend he should not be executed because he suffers from severe mental illness.

He was scheduled to die at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. His last meal, according to the Miami Herald, was a chicken country fried sandwich and sweet tea.

Florida officials immediately asked the U.S. Supreme Court to lift the stay. The justices earlier Tuesday turned aside another Ferguson appeal.

Ferguson was convicted of killing eight people in South Florida in 1977 and 1978, including a teenage couple, and was a prime suspect in another double slaying. He suffers from paranoid schizophrenia but has previously been ruled competent for execution.

His lawyers say he believes he is the "Prince of God," according to the Miami Herald, to bolster their case that he is too mentally ill to be executed.

Death penalty opponents join in a chant across from Florida State Prison in Raiford, Fla. on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that inmates who suffer from "mental retardation" are exempt from the death penalty. According to the high court:

Mentally retarded persons frequently know the difference between right and wrong and are competent to stand trial, but, by definition, they have diminished capacities to understand and process information, to communicate, to abstract from mistakes and learn from experience, to engage in logical reasoning, to control impulses, and to understand others? reactions.

Their deficiencies do not warrant an exemption from criminal sanctions, but diminish their personal culpability.

You Can Take A Skyrim Class At A Texas University

Here Be Dragons

We had one comic book course when I went to college and I didn?t even get to take it. Now one university in Texas is offering a course on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Maybe I need to go back to school??

The course is titled ?Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim? and you can take it at Rice University, a private institution in Houston, Texas with?Professor Donna Beth Ellard.

So what will you be learning in ?Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim??

This course has two goals. First, it introduces students to fantasy as both psychological concept and driving force in gamer culture; and second, using these paradigms, it considers how and why medieval Scandinavia serves as a locus of modern Anglo-American fantasy. To these ends, students will read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim. While the course begins by identifying moments of intersection between the worlds of the sagas and of Skyrim (inclement environments, supernatural figures, mythologies), the course is not in any means meant to map the former onto the latter. The purpose of establishing these connections is to then consider how elements of medieval Scandinavian culture have been taken out of historical milieu and literary context, morphed into unfamiliar shape, and appropriated towards other fantastic pursuits. We?ll consider the political saga of Skyrim, with its emphasis on Empire and rebellion, as pursuits made possible by way of Scandinavia in order to think through what Scandinavian fantasy worlds are really about and why they resonate with contemporary Anglo-American culture.

I think that should be ?three goals? with the third being ?be awesome.? You think Skyrim will be sold in the campus book shop?

Bayonets? US Still Has Quite a Few

The most memorable line of Monday night's debate was President Obama's pointed "horses and bayonets" jab at Mitt Romney for questioning what Romney said was a shrinking U.S. Navy.

Obama responded that Romney "hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. " He added, "You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed."

Horses and bayonets quickly became a Titter punchline, but while they may no longer be needed for bayonet charges, it turns out the Pentagon still owns a hefty arsenal of bayonets

The Army said today it has 419,155 bayonets in its inventory. The Marine Corps has another 195,334 bayonets that it bought in 2004 and it plans on buying 175,061 more bayonets this year. A Marine official says it's not accurate to add the two totals together as the new ones will include replacements for ones already in service as well as additional stocks.

Bayonets are standard issue for Marines deployed to combat areas, though they don't necessarily carry them with them when they're on patrol.

Several soldiers who spoke to ABC News said that deploying with bayonets to Iraq and Afghanistan varied from unit to unit. While not a requirement one soldier said they were available if needed.

However, a 2011 Stars and Stripes article quoted a former Army official as saying bayonets had not been issued to soldiers deploying in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2010 the Army dropped bayonet training for its recruits in basic training.

The Army also reported today that it has 176 horses. The horses kept at Fort Myer, Va., are used mainly for ceremonial duties at Arlington Cemetery and the Capital region. There are also some horses located at Fort Hood, Texas.

The Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center in California trains Marines in using horses, mules and donkeys to carry supplies in mountainous regions.

Romney has proposed increasing the Navy to more than 300 ships from the current fleet size of 285 ships. A Defense official pointed out today that the Navy's 30 year shipbuilding plan presented to Congress earlier this year will result in 300 ships by 2019.

However, the official also said that while numbers are important when talking about a globally deployed Navy it's important to look beyond the numbers at a ship's capabilities when it's deployed.

"When you look at an Arliegh Burke Class destroyer it's missile defense capable, it can fire cruise missiles, it can conduct anti-submarine warfare, it has a gun on front for anti-surface warfare. It can patrol the coast of not only the U.S. but off the coast of other countries. That's a pretty capable platform," the official said.

Adding that these destroyers can also carry helicopters the official said, "It's not single use, that's been the evolution of not just the Navy but of our platforms as well."

The official said today's ships can carry out the capabilities of the 600 ship Navy envisioned by the Reagan administration.

'MyXperia' trademark filing suggests Sony might launch its own cloud service

There's no shortage of cloud storage sites and apps, but it looks like Sony might be trying to get a little more involved in ethereal storage. According to this European trademark filing spotted by Juggly, Sony Mobile has staked a claim to MyXperia, outlining that the service (or mobile app) involves itself in the "upload, storage, retrieval, download, transmission and delivery of digital content and media." In short, the kind of stuff you already do with your cloud service of choice. While Sony has no shortage of cloud-based services, MyXperia.com currently sends you to a bare-bones login page, underneath the Sony Mobile umbrella -- it looks like we'll have to wait for some account credentials before we get to take a look.
