If ?Brokeback Mountain? is your beginning and end of Western LGBT history, it?s time to expand your horizons.
The Autry National Center was awarded the Paladin Award for preserving, maintaining, promoting and communication Western LGBT history.
The museum received the award, in part, for its Out West at the Autry, an ongoing series of public programs exploring the contributions of the LGBT community to Western American history.
For example, in June, D. Michael Quinn, author of the book ?Same-Sex Dynamics Among Nineteenth-Century Americans: A Mormon Example,? discussed the Mormon Church?s former acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships.
Conceived in 2009 by curator Gregory Hinton, Out West at the Autry was inspired by the Autry?s installation of the iconic shirts worn by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in ?Brokeback Mountain? as well as the International Gay Rodeo Association?s archives in the Autry Library?s permanent collection.
The next Out West at the Autry program is a discussion about the friendship between Oscar Wilde and Buffalo Bill Cody.
The award was given by the Gay & Lesbian Rodeo Heritage Foundation during a Nov.? 12 ceremony at Las Vegas? Tuscany Hotel.
